World Read Aloud Day

On February 1, 2019, we will celebrate World Read Aloud DayWellington C. Mepham High School is celebrating by reading You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Stories to Read Together by Mary Ann Hoberman via Skype to students at the Belton School District #124 in Belton, Missouri. Mr. Achtizger's 12th grade AP students will connect with Mrs. Davis's second grade class. We aren't the only ones celebrating! World Read Aloud Day is celebrated in over 100 countries!

From LitWorld:
"We think everyone in the world should get to read and write. Every year, on World Read Aloud Day, people all around the globe read aloud together and share stories to advocate for literacy as a human right that belongs to all people. Here's why that's important:
  • 750 million adults around the world - two-thirds of them women - lack basic reading and writing skills
  • Reading aloud to children every day puts them almost a year ahead of children who do not receive daily read alouds
  • 66% of kids ages 6-11 say that reading together is fun"

Ozobots

Ozobots have found a home in Mepham's MakerSpace. We purchased six Evos this year. Award-winning Evo is a robot designed for ages 9+. It is for beginners to master coders. It offers two ways to code: online and screen-free. It's app connected and blue-tooth enabled. It has many programmable features, such as optical sensors for detecting lines and color codes, proximity sensors for obstacle detection, 7 LED lights, wheels and motor, and a built-in speaker. It also is Bluetooth® Smart (30 ft. range) and has a strong polycarbonate shell. It has automatic firmware updates, regular app updates with new features and games, and a rechargeable LiPo battery (60 minute charge time).

Students can request it at the circulation desk. We can't wait to see what you will dream up using Evo.
