Libraries = Strong Communities

National Library Week is April 7-13, 2019. We have come a long way since the Mepham High School Library opened in 1939. This library means so many things to so many people: we provide free access to books, magazines, databases, and media, host fascinating programs and events, and strengthen our entire community through education and lifelong learning.

Jeff Somers

We are so very excited to welcome author, Jeff Somers, to Mepham High School on Tuesday, April 9, 2019. Mr. Sommers is scheduled to speak to our juniors at the annual National English Honor Society Induction Ceremony. These 49 students have met the rigorous requirements necessary for induction, including maintaining a 90 or above average in English, an 85 or above overall average, participating in three department-approved writing contests, written a reflection paper regarding a live artistic performance, attended our annual author visit and participated in an English-related club on the school campus. We are looking forward to Mr. Somer's speech and to see how he connects with our students.
Author, Jeff Somers, to visit Mepham High School

After a series of head traumas resulted in a sudden interest in writing, he published dozens of short stories, including “Ringing the Changes” which was included in Best American Mystery Stories 2006, and nine novels, including the Avery Cates series , “Chum,” and The Ustari Cycle. His book on the craft and business of writing, "Writing Without Rules," was published by Writer's Digest Books in 2018. Skype in the Classroom with Dr. Jane Goodall

On Tuesday, April 2nd, our students participated in a Skype in the Classroom broadcast with Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, founder of the Jane Goodall Institute & UN Messenger of Peace. During the event, Dr. Goodall spoke to our students about what motivated her to study chimpanzees in the wild, the scientific discoveries that she made through her studies, and her reasons for hope for our planet. We watched as the groundbreaking scientist shared what she was like when she was younger, her work with chimpanzees, and tips for overcoming criticism. Most importantly, she shared how our students can get involved as change-makers in their community. Inspired to be like Jane, our students will be empowered to complete a service-learning project that makes a difference for the issues THEY care about.

If you didn't have a chance to join us at our first Skype in the Classroom broadcast, you can still meet Dr. Jane Goodall at our next event, which is being held on Tuesday, April 9th in the school library
during periods 2 and 3.
