Crafting Holiday Cards for Our Local First Responders

On Monday, December 5, 2022, all students are welcome to join us in the school library after school to craft holiday cards for our local first responders. Let's show some love and support to those that care for us. All supplies will be provided including stickers, card stock, markers, crayons, glitter(!), holiday music, and so much more 

Suncatchers

On Monday, May 9, 2022, the Mepham High School Library's MakerSpace will be hosting an ELITE Event after school. Students and faculty will have the opportunity to create suncatchers from plastic cups. By using permanent makers on #6 plastics, also known as polystyrene, we can bake them in the oven on broil and they melt down flat, creating our beautiful suncatchers. Mepham's MakerSpace is back!! We will be hosting an ELITE event on Monday, November 8th in the school library at 2:15 pm. Students will have the opportunity to decorate Thanksgiving Day placemats that will be used in our Thanksgiving baskets. We give over 100 baskets to our local community through the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard. We need all the help we can get! So stop by the library and help us give back. Whales for a Cause 2021

Our School and Community Leadership students in Mrs. Geller's class colored Vineyard Vines Whales from the Mepham High School Library MakerSpace. Vineyard Vines partnered with Simon & Schuster and First Book for Fall 2021. It was easy to get involved. We just downloaded a whale from their website, printed it out, colored it in, and then posted it on social media with #WhalesForACause2021 to our school's Instagram account. Vineyard Vines will donate one book to First Book for every whale in our post. First Book to provide brand new books to kids in need. You can get in on the action too! Just stop by our library all month long and grab a whale handout and color it in.

STEAM Cart

We recently purchased this Whitney Brother's STEAM Cart to celebrate the reopening of the Mepham MakerSpace! Woohoo!

"This rolling cabinet features three shelves that each accommodate three Gratnells trays with interchangeable fitted lids. We included a message on the dry erase board on top of the shelves encouraging students to help themselves.

The back of the cart has a top-to-bottom pegboard to keep tools within easy reach, plus a big pocket shelf at the bottom to store large papers, clipboards, and more. The cart also includes an accessory package with ten J-hooks, five red plastic trays, and five spring clips, which all attach to the pegboard (in the back, not pictured).

This cart is mounted on non-marking, heavy-duty locking casters, so we can easily bring it with us wherever it’s needed, even when it’s fully loaded. It’s made of durable birch plywood with a safe, non-toxic, natural UV finish that won't yellow and withstands rigorous use."

This STEAM cart was purchased thanks to a generous donation from Mepham's Class of 1954.

Grateful

This year looks a lot different than years past, including the tempo of the Mepham High School Library. The precautionary measures put in place by the school district has limited the number of students in the library, but not the spirit of the students! While we are not currently hosting our normal ELITE events and our MakerSpace is temporarily closed, that has not stopped our gracious students from creating these beautiful placemats that will be used in our Thanksgiving baskets. We give over 100 baskets to our local community through the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard. 

While this year has been hard on so many of us, there is still so much to be thankful for this holiday season. If you are struggling and need help, there are resources here at Mepham High School to assist you. Reach out to our amazing counseling services or any teacher for help.

The generosity of our students overwhelms me sometimes. This year we decided to send our school-made holiday cards to the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard. Stress and Anxiety Relief Through 3D Printing

Research shows that fidget toys help to relieve stress and anxiety... and it's not just for kids! Students or staff can print their own designs or find one on the Internet at Thingiverse.com. We were able to print the one featured above in less than 3 hours using our Afinia H400 3D Printer in the Mepham MakerSpace. Have questions? See Ms. Stack in the library for help.

Whales for a Cause

Don't you just love it when a collaboration comes together? Our School and Community Leadership students in Mrs. Geller's class colored Vineyard Vines Whales from the Mepham High School Library MakerSpace to raise money and awareness for No Kid Hungry! A total of 154 whales were collected and displayed around the school library. #WhalesForACause #mephamgivesback

The Class of 1954 has so much school spirit. Every year since 2014, they have made a generous donation to our school library. This year in honor of their 65th anniversary upon graduation, they have donated $6,500. A donation to the school library benefits all our students, faculty, and staff. The items we have purchased in the past have included a 3D printer, iPad reference bar, newspaper stand, MakerSpace materials, furniture, eBooks, and so much more. Some of the items we plan to purchase with this donation include a large flat-screen television, new desks, and additional charging stations.

Mepham High School means a lot to a lot of people.We strive to give a great education, sense of community, and opportunities to all our students. Your generous donations allows us to continue that pursuit. Thank you to the alumni for giving back.

Learning About Life Cycles

The Mepham High School Library recently had some new arrivals. We purchased Insect Lore World of Eric Carle, The Very Hungry Caterpillar Butterfly Growing Kit with Live Caterpillars! We started with 6 very hungry caterpillar babies and nutritious food. When they become chrysalis, we will move them to the station log. When they hatch into butterflies (Painted Ladies), we will feed them sugar water and fruit. Then a few days later, we will release them into the courtyard. Come watch the journey. We will update this page with photographs so that you too can witness the life-cycle of a butterfly. 

I was truly surprised by how many students love this little project of ours. Many of them remember doing this in their homes and at elementary school. We are happy to bring back a blast from the past.

Paint Chip Poetry

Join us in the Mepham High School Library on Monday, April 8 at 2:15 pm for our next ELITE event! Composing a poem is easy and fun in this colorful and creative way! Students will have an opportunity to select a paint chip in any color they choose, then pen a poem while incorporating the paint chip color. As always, all materials will be provided. All students are welcome to attend.

Ozobots

Ozobots have found a home in Mepham's MakerSpace. We purchased six Evos this year. Award-winning Evo is a robot designed for ages 9+. It is for beginners to master coders. It offers two ways to code: online and screen-free. It's app connected and blue-tooth enabled. It has many programmable features, such as optical sensors for detecting lines and color codes, proximity sensors for obstacle detection, 7 LED lights, wheels and motor, and a built-in speaker. It also is Bluetooth® Smart (30 ft. range) and has a strong polycarbonate shell. It has automatic firmware updates, regular app updates with new features and games, and a rechargeable LiPo battery (60 minute charge time).

Interactive Ancient History Museum

Mr. Patten and Mr. Mazieka's 9th grade World History classes recently came into the library to research four ancient civilizations: India, China, Rome, and Greece. Each group was assigned four categories: geography, government, society, arts and culture. The arts and culture students were responsible for producing a 3D print of an object that represented their time period. The other groups had the option of creating a digital and/or a hand-crafted display to present what they learned. All students utilized Mepham's MakerSpace. On Friday, we opened the library for students to walk the exhibits.

Join us in the school library in our MakerSpace to craft holiday cards for Mercy Haven’s network of families. Mercy Haven is  a non-sectarian, non-profit organization located in Islip Terrace that offers assistance to over 3,000 Long Islanders, approximately half of which are children. Mercy Haven’s mission is to acknowledge the dignity and potential of people who are homeless, living with mental illness, or living in poverty by providing housing, advocacy, education, and life skills development. All craft supplies will be provided. We look forward to seeing you there! 

3Doodler Start

3Doodler Start 

This award-winning kid-safe 3D printing pen has been a big hit here at the Mepham High School Library. Even though this pen is designed for ages 6+, our high school students love how easy it is to use. We started with the 3Doodler Start Essentials 3D Printing Pen Set, which includes a 3Doodler Start Pen (Blue), 2 Packs of 3Doodler Start Plastic, Activity Guide (with over 12 projects) and Micro-USB Charging Cable. We also have the 3Doodler Create which is designed for ages 14+, but the students like the grip better on the 3Doodler Create. We have purchased accessories, such as molds and stencils now that the students have a good idea how to use this device. The 3Doodler  pens are available in the library (behind the circulation desk) for all our students to create. Just ask Ms. Stack or Ms. Gellerman. What will you make?
