2019 Word of the Year

Oxford names ‘Climate Emergency’ as its 2019 Word of the Year. The Word of the Year designation is intended to highlight “a word or expression shown through usage evidence to reflect the ethos, mood or preoccupations of the passing year.”

The term is defined as "a situation in which urgent action is required to reduce or halt climate change and avoid potentially irreversible environmental damage resulting from it," the Oxford Dictionary reported.

Check out this New York Times article that explains how this year's word was selected.

New Library Display

Here are a few photos from our new library display. This display will be updated weekly as new school and library events are featured. Have something you want to share? Just let Mrs. Stack know and she will add it to the presentation! We are always looking for innovative ways to reach our school community. A very special thank you to Rose Luna, Librarian at Freeport High School for posting this tweet and inspiring me to finally get this old television up and running! The thing I love the most about being a librarian is the collaborative spirit among colleagues, the willingness to share ideas, and the enthusiasm to try new things.

Thanksgiving Placemats

Mepham's MakerSpace will be hosting an ELITE event on Monday, November 4th in the school library at 2:15 pm. Students will have the opportunity to decorate Thanksgiving Day placemats that will be used in our Thanksgiving baskets. Our goal is to have at least 2 placemats in each basket. We give over 100 baskets to our local community through the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard. This is a tall order. We need all the help we can get! So stop and give back.
