Book Club: Book #5

It's never too late to join Mepham's Book Club. We will meet to discuss our fifth book, The Cruel Prince by Holly Black on Wednesday, April 26, 2023, in the school library after school. Snacks will be provided. All students are welcome.

"Tell Me What You're Reading" buttons will be distributed to any students that did not receive one last month. We will also choose our next book club read. It's never too late to join. TV Talk

Thanks to a donation from the Class of 1954, we were able to make a few technology updates in the Mepham Library. Firstly, we were able to replace the 6 iPads from the iPad Reference Bar. Next, we purchased two 55" Samsung LED 4K televisions to hang in the library. These TVs will display a library slideshow and will also broadcast our morning announcements and other special installments from Bellmore-Merrick Broadcasting.

This project was set in motion before Covid-19 (in fact the televisions arrived on Friday, March 14, 2020 - our last day of in-person school for the rest of that year. Safe to say, it has taken a while to get this project off the ground! 

Starting Off the New Year with New Furniture

We are starting off the New Year in the Mepham Library with new furniture thanks again to a very generous donation from the Class of 1954. We were able to purchase 6 new tablet armchairs. The students seem to be settling into them very nicely. As always, this is YOUR school library. If you have any suggestions on how we can make it better, please let us know. We love hearing about your creative ideas. 

Door Decorating Contest

The library participated in this year's door decorating contest. The SADD Club has hosted the Doors for a Cause for the last two years to raise money for the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard. One of the stipulations of the contest is that a hidden pirate must be part of the scene. Can you find ours?

Mepham MakerSpace: Holiday Ornaments

Please join us after school on December 12th in the Mepham MakerSpace to craft your own holiday ornament from plastic cups and permanent markers. All materials are provided and all students are welcome to attend. Please sign up here.
 

Crafting Holiday Cards for Our Local First Responders

On Monday, December 5, 2022, all students are welcome to join us in the school library after school to craft holiday cards for our local first responders. Let's show some love and support to those that care for us. All supplies will be provided including stickers, card stock, markers, crayons, glitter(!), holiday music, and so much more

Community Service: Thanksgiving Placemats

On Monday. November 7th after school in the library, students will have the opportunity to decorate placemats that will be placed into the gift basket for our families in need from the Bellmore-Merrick Community Cupboard. This event draws students to contribute and give back to their community every year. As always, all materials are provided and all students are welcome. If you have any questions, please see Mrs. Stack.

Mepham Book Club - The Sequel

Mepham's Book Club is back for year 2. We are excited to have new students join our literary circle. Our first meeting will be held in the school library on Wednesday, September 28th. Banned Books Week 2022

Banned Books Week (September 18 - 24, 2022) is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read. It spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. Laurie Halse Anderson, the author of Speak, is credited with this quote: “Censorship is the child of fear and the father of ignorance.”

"Books unite us. They reach across boundaries and build connections between readers. Censorship, on the other hand, divides us and creates barriers." Some of my favorite books have been banned or challenged, including Looking for Alaska by John Green and To Kill A Mockingbird by Harper Lee. What are some of your favorite books? Have you ever checked to see if your favorite books have been banned or challenged?

Mepham High School Salaries

Back in 2017, we had a series of posts celebrating the school's 80th anniversary. The posts were throwbacks of photographs from past Mepham High School yearbooks, articles from the school newspaper, The Buccaneer, and artifacts from the alumni association. Mepham High School has such a rich history and we are lucky enough to be able to share that with you here. 

I recently came across the salary schedule for Mepham High School for faculty from September 1936. Two items really stood out to me. First, there were so few teachers (obviously because there were fewer students back then). Second, do you notice which teacher was paid the most and which teacher was paid the least?

Today school librarians are not part of the clerical staff. In fact, librarians are required to have a Master's Degree in Library Science in New York State. We are in fact teacher-librarians. Schools with librarians and libraries have been shown to increase test scores on standardized tests throughout our country. 

You have fantastic teachers and programs at Mepham High School. We are happy to provide you with opportunities to explore and find your path. The library is here to assist you in this endeavor and to teach you the skills to help you be successful.

We have many new books for Fall 2022 including fiction, non-fiction, biographies, short stories, and graphic novels. There is something for everyone. Stop by to find your next favorite book!

Welcome Back 2022-2023

Welcome Pirates! My name is Mrs. Stack and I am the librarian here at Mepham High School. We are so happy to have you back with us this year and also want to welcome our new pirates - the Class of 2026!

The school library has a lot of resources to offer you, including books, computers, printers, school supplies, magazines, newspapers, online resources (databases), a 3D printer, scanners, charging stations and so much more! So if you are an old friend or a new student, stop by to say hello. Students are allowed to come to the library during any free period, during their lunch period, or after school. We are open on Mondays and Fridays until 3:30 PM and Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays until 4:30 PM (unless otherwise noted on our doors). Mrs. Gellerman, the library clerk, and I are here to serve you. If you need any help, please let us know.

Summer Reading 2022

Summer reading for Mepham High School has been posted here.

The English Department invites students from all grade levels to select a book of their choice to complete the summer reading assignment this year. (AP and Senior Experience have separate assignments. Please see your teacher for details). 

• Please select a book that is appropriate for high school. You should not have read this book before, either in class or independently. You can choose fiction or nonfiction novels, graphic novels, or plays. You may also select anthologies that include poetry, essays, short stories, etc.  
• Please complete the book prior to the first day of school in September. Your English teacher(s) will ask you to write a reflection on your summer reading selection in the beginning of the school year. 

Meeting Maddie

On Wellness Wednesday, we were visited by Maddie, a lab/Greyhound mix therapy dog. She greeted the students and spent time with them and her favorite chew toy. Dogs are the best medicine. She made many students and teachers smile on a day when we needed it the most. Thank you to Therapy Dogs of Long Island for arranging the visit and providing this important service to our community. A big thank you to Maddie for being patient and loving with us.

Come meet Maddie a lab/Greyhound mix therapy dog. She will be waiting for you after school in the library on Wednesday, May 25, 2022, at 2:15 pm. Her favorite activities include playing and laying in the sun. Students interested in attending must sign up with Mrs. Stack in the library and have a parent/guardian sign a permission slip.
