Chipotle Reading Rewards

We recently reached out to Chipotle when we heard about their Chipotle Reading Rewards, which are special bookmarks that include a coupon for Buy-One/Get-One FREE entrée cards.

We partnered with Chipotle to bring our students this great reward in conjunction with our "Reading Without Walls" Challenge, which you can read about here.

With a surge of independent reading in grades 9-12, we wanted to reward our students for all their hard work. This is the first year that Chipotle is supporting teen reading programs and we think that's important because we should all be lifelong learners. Thank you Chipotle for supporting our mission to make reading matter.

Reading Without Walls

Since many of our English teachers have created space in the curriculum for independent reading- which in our building means giving students choice in what they read -  this is the perfect year for us to participate in the Reading Without Walls Challenge! The program will run from Monday, April 9 – Friday, May 18. Please encourage all your students to participate.

What is the Reading Without Walls Challenge?
Reading Without Walls means exploring books about characters who look or live differently than you, topics you haven’t discovered, or formats that you haven’t tried. Reading Without Walls promotes diversity and opens readers’ eyes to new ideas and experiences. In this divided time in our nation’s history, Reading Without Walls is an inclusive way to spread appreciation and understanding for others — and to learn new and exciting things.

How do you participate?
It’s simple. Our students just need to follow these easy steps. 

1. Read a book:
   

   a.       about a character who doesn’t look like you or live like you 

   b.       about a topic you don’t know much about 

   c.       in a format that you don’t normally read for fun (graphic novel, verse, audio book, etc.)

2. Fill out whichever form (see below) applies to the book you selected and bring it to the school library. We will then post it to our latest bulletin board. We will have more forms in the library and in your English classrooms.
3.  For each form submitted, students will receive a Buy-One/Get-One FREE entrée card from Chipotle. Students will also be entered to win a Barnes & Noble Gift Card.

Update: A week and a half in to the challenge, and the submissions are pouring in. Keep up the good work Pirates!

We Love YOUR #bookfacefriday

Ms. Schiulaz's Photography II class took a field trip to the Mepham High School Library today in honor of #bookfacefriday (yay for cross-curricular teaching!). Her lesson on perspective aligned perfectly with our #bookfacefriday competition. Here are some of the results. Choose your favorite one below.

Inspired by this weekend's New York Times article entitled, Oh, Those Clever Librarians and Their #Bookface, we have created our own #bookfacefriday photo competition. The rules are simple, just take your own photo and post it to Twitter on Friday. Then make sure to tag it #bookfacefriday and @MephamHS. We will then repost the photos to Mepham's Twitter account. Be clever and have fun!

Name That Book!

CONTEST!!! Come to the library and pick up a “Name That Book!” sheet. It lists 20 alternative book titles with a word bank of correct titles on the back. Guess the correct title of each fake one. For example, what book does this fake title describe, A is a dangerous letter? The answer is: Pretty Little Liars by Sara Shepard.

Bring the completed sheet back to the library by the end of the day on Thursday, May 7th. Winners get the satisfaction of being well- read or being a really good guesser. Just kidding! There are legitimate prizes!

Unmask the Heroes

If you stop by the library before December 22nd check out the new bulletin board and "Unmask the Heroes." Twenty teachers have posed behind masks. Can you tell who is under those masks? The student(s) to get the most answers correct wins a prize! Come by the library before December 22nd to enter.

Have You Inked Lately?

Teen Ink is a national teen magazine, book series, and website devoted entirely to teenage writing, art, photos and forums since 1989. According to their Website, students must be age 13-19 to participate, register and/or submit work. This magazine is distributed through classrooms by English teachers, Creative Writing teachers, Journalism teachers and art teachers around the country. Teen Ink magazine offers some of the most thoughtful and creative work generated by teens and has the largest distribution of any publication of its kind.
Teen Ink has NO staff writers or artists; they depend completely on submissions from teenagers nationwide for their content. They offer teenagers the opportunity to publish their creative work and opinions on the issues that affect their lives - everything from love and family to teen smoking and community service. They have published more than 45,000 teens.
So, what are you waiting for? This is another great opportunity to have your work published.

Writing Contests

Every year several Mepham High School students have their work written published, whether it be poems, essays, short fiction pieces, etc. How do they get published? They simply enter writing contests. We have an entire webpage devoted to writing contests taking place all over our country. How do you get to the writing contests page on our Website? Go to the W.C. Mepham High School Website, click on the "Departments" tab at the top of the page, and then click on "English," next click on "Student Resources," finally click on the link for "Writing Contests." Hardcopies of all contests are available in the Learning Center (Room 203). What are you waiting for? If you have a piece of writing that you think is worthy of publication submit it TODAY!
