In honor of yesterday’s #WorldReadAloudDay, Mr. Achtziger’s & Mr. Richard’s 12th grade class Skyped with Mrs. Sullivan’s 4th grade class from Levy Lakeside School @MerrickUFSD. Both classes took turns reading aloud.

Read Across America

Join us as we celebrate a nation of diverse readers on Friday, March 1st for Read Across America. Come into your school library and find many of these books that represent an array of experiences and cultures, which are recommended by the National Education Association (NEA).

NEA’s Read Across America is an annual reading motivation and awareness program that calls for every child in every community to celebrate reading through our theme: Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers. Many schools and libraries celebrate with an annual event on March 2, the birthday of children’s author Dr. Seuss, but NEA’s Read Across America also provides NEA members, parents, caregivers, and children the resources and activities they need to keep reading on the calendar 365 days a year.
In our diverse and complex society, students need books that provide both windows and mirrors if we are going to create more readers, writers, and people who feel included and recognized, and who understand that the world is far richer than just their experiences alone.

Skyping with the Other Mrs. Stack

When our friends from Missouri couldn't Skype with us on World Read Aloud Day, Mrs. Stack called on her sister-in-law, the other Mrs. Stack, who teachers 6th grade at Park Avenue Elementary School in North Merrick, New York. These 6th graders learned the poems from the book, You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Stories to Read Together by Mary Ann Hoberman and did a fantastic job. Our 12th graders from Mr. Achtizger's and Mrs. Dell'Olio's AP class had a wonderful time reading too. We all win when we read together. World Read Aloud Day

On February 1, 2019, we will celebrate World Read Aloud Day. Wellington C. Mepham High School is celebrating by reading You Read to Me, I'll Read to You: Very Short Stories to Read Together by Mary Ann Hoberman via Skype to students at the Belton School District #124 in Belton, Missouri. Mr. Achtizger's 12th grade AP students will connect with Mrs. Davis's second grade class. We aren't the only ones celebrating! World Read Aloud Day is celebrated in over 100 countries!

Bellmore-Merrick Writers Festival

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District will be hosting its inaugural Bellmore-Merrick Writers Festival on Friday, February 26th. Students, faculty, and staff are invited to come read original poetry, fiction, or non-fiction. Kicking off the event will be keynote speaker, Linda Opyr, Nassau County Poet Laureate. The registration deadline is Wednesday, December 23rd. Click on the video below for more information.

Open Mic Night

Come join us for A Picnic Under the Stars at this year's Open Mic Night, which has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 26th at 7:00 pm in the West Cafeteria. Come read a poem or sing a song. Everyone is welcome to attend. Tickets are $5 and can be purchased from a Fragments member or at the door.

You're never too old to celebrate National Education Association's (NEA) Read Across America Day!  So on Monday, March 2, 2015 (Dr. Seuss' birthday!) grab a book, any book will do, and read, read, read!

Students at Mepham High School will join millions of their peers across the country to celebrate the sixteenth annual NEA's Read Across America Day. NEA's Read Across America Day celebrates the joys of reading. They expect more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read.

To honor the good doctor and celebrate the fun and value of reading, Mepham High School is asking you to join NEA and many of America's leading literacy, youth, and civic groups in bringing a nation of readers together under one hat-the red and white stovepipe made famous by the Cat in the Hat-for a flurry (or furry) of reading excitement!

My all-time favorite Dr. Seuss book is Green Eggs and Ham! We have a saying in our family, "You don't have to like it, but you have to try it!"

D.E.A.R. - Drop Everything And Read Day
National D.E.A.R. Day is a special reading celebration to remind and encourage families to make reading together on a daily basis a family priority. The birthday of beloved author Beverly Cleary is the official event date, April 12^th. So... D.E.A.R.!
